Summer is often a time when people tend to drink more. While many people feel they can drink alcohol with minimal negative impacts, others find that the negative parts about drinking are starting to outweigh the positive.

If you are tired of hangovers or the embarrassment that can come from getting a little too drunk at Aunt Susan's BBQ, it might be worth exploring your relationship with alcohol. What might it be like to try and cut back? Treat it like an experiment and see how it feels.

1) Set a limit and stick to it. I know this can feel easier said than done, but deciding how much you may want to drink before an event, might help you drink in moderation. Some people like to set a limit for a day, week, or event.

2) Get an accountability partner. Someone you can be honest with and trust to support your goals. Whether it’s a close friend, a therapist, or family member you can talk to about your drinking.

3) Plan things that don’t revolve around alcohol. Whether that is committing to a long hike, bike ride, or other morning activity, plan something you won’t want to be hungover for.

This post is not meant for people seeking an abstinence approach to alcohol, but for those who simply want to cut back.
